Thing 23

The Thing I enjoyed the most was the blog itself. I think will create a new one to use as a semi-journal to help others and my friends follow my life a little closer, however not too close. The most challenging Thing about this was finding the time to work on it. After speding hours online for classes I found my enthusiam for spending even more time on the computer was not there. However in the final hours I can say I finished this and am so glad I did. This is a wonderful way to learn about new and sometimes intimidating technologies. I hope to be more adventureous in the future, however I still feeling over run by the vast quantities of technology that are thrown at us daily. Progress is great, but being unable to keep up is overwhelming. I would definitely recommend hesitant computer users try out programs similiar to NT23Things.
Thanks for the program. Happy almost fall.
Lisa

Thing 22

If I were to develop a 23 Things program for my library it would have to be done throughout a years time in quarters. The staff at library range from a variety of computer skills, however time is not really available for them to persue professional development on any level unless it is done on their own. I would start them off with a basic Google tutorial, which would include using every feature offered before tackling social networks, Flickr, Delicious, and many of the other things we've tried here. I would also categorize the quarters into different aims.
Quarter One: Google Skills
Docs, blogs, translator, Scholar, OCLC, etc.

Quarter Two: Social Networks
Facebook, Ning, LinkedIn, Myspace

Quarter Three: Professional Resources
LibraryThing
LibWorm
LibraryElf
Wikis

Quarter Four: Fun but Useful resources.
YouTube
Podcasts
Delicious
Tagging
Digg

Thing 21

Podcasts could be used to allow patrons who cannot attend a lecture listen to it afterward. For auditory learners it could be a method of teaching them if they can not attend a class the library is holding. Podcasts could also be used from a library's home page to let people now of changes in policies, new materials, new services, and many other things. I think I may need to delve into this area a bit more before I understand it. I have downloaded podcasts to listen to for learning about studying abroad and found them very informative.
Cornell has podcasts about its library's history which is very cool from my historian point of view. The National Library of Medicine has a podcast about the Swine Flu vaccine. Oh there are just so many podcasts out there to explore, I really like the ones that also supply transcripts, because when you have a slow Internet connection like me it makes it difficult to listen to in real time.

I think some patrons at my library would be interested in podcasts about politics, book talks, and how to do things, but for the most part they would not be interested.

Thing 20

YouTube is a great tool for finding information on how to repair sinks and many other repairs, a great laugh such as the SNL United Way skit with Peyton Manning. The Peyton Manning skit was my first introduction to YouTube.

So library related youtube videos:
Are a great method of informing patrons, students, or anyone whose wondering how to use the library system from finding books to how to use the databases. Another coworker and I would like to create videos like these for our patrons, but I do not have the time. I would love to work in a library system that would allow me the opportunity and the resources needed to create a quality product.

I looked up American Library Association and found some videos about conferences and contests.
Last year I found a clip about using bibliotherapy on YouTube and forgot that it was not a reliable resource and used it in a bibliography I was making. Needless to say my points were a little off.

YouTube can be a great source of entertainment, but it can also be a good source of information as well.

Thing 19

I love google docs, I would rather use a google doc than a wiki any day. I've used google docs for school and love looking at the the templates for the different forms, presentations, and spreadsheets. It is so much easier to use than the Microsoft templates. The templates are much nicer looking than Microsofts. I haven't had to print anything, so I don't know how they come out.

Thing 18

For my Wikipedia search I looked up the term British Monarchy, there was quite a lengthy discussion about various terminology used to be used.
In my local library association we use WetPaint for our newsletter and updates instead of a static website. So I added some pages to the DFW 23 page under Lisa Anne. I added TV show and book recommendations, and interest and hobbies pages.

I'm not a true fan of wikis but wet paint is okay.

Thing 17

I found the easiest way for me to use LibWorm was to use its subject search. My search for my library did not come up with anything nor did a search for my undergrad library, however that is not surprising, since neither has a huge web presence. I do not think LibWorm is an accurate source of information for scholarly research, but if you want to spend the day looking at all sorts of library information, instead of actually working on it be my guest. This site may be more useful if in a search for specific library related materials.

Thing 16

I thought I already had a LibraryThing account, but turns out I did not. While this site could be fun if I were not in grad school and working full time in a library. I do not find it necessary to catalog my book collection at this point in time. However I did catalog 3 of my newest purchases. I also laughed at loud about the upcoming title Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. I have yet to read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, though I would like to when I get the chance. I also found a great website to check out about the Association of Independent Information Professionals. So this site will be great to check out occassionally, but will probably just add it to my google reader.

Thing 14

Okay so I have attempted delicious, but it prompted me with some sort of error and to come back in a few hours. So I will do that, but I want to give my thoughts on delicious in the meantime. I have been considering buying a new laptop you know one of those mini ones that does not weigh 12 pounds like my current one. So when I do buy a new model it would be terrific to have all my bookmarks available, especially since I am considering using a different OS on the new laptop also. Why do I want to use a different OS you might ask really its just to diversify myself by learning about all the different tools available and to make me more marketable and adaptable to new technology just like what I had hoped to gain by taking part in the North Texas 23, this summer.

I attended a presentation on using internet apps to create your website and they used delicious however I did not understand what they were doing. I still don't understand what they were doing but hopefully after more discovery on the delicious site I'll be able to piece it together.

One puzzle piece at a time, but this puzzle has no finished product, so maybe it should be a chain link instead IDK.

Thing 15 Digg

I'm skipping Thing 14 for a moment because I did 15 instead .

My thoughts on Digg, well, I defintely like this set up better than my Google Reader. I found way more interesting blogs to link to on Digg. However if I was going to use Digg I would have to give up Google and well I've already got stuff there so why change now.

Digg was very entertaining and I like that I could connect it to my FB page if I wanted to, but I like privacy so I won't at this time, but maybe in the future. I like that articles on Digg are raed but just because something's popular does not mean it is accurate or useful to me personally.

Thing 13: Tagging

Tagging

I think tagging is terrific for personal collections of photos, documents, and posts. However when there is no control over what terms are used people are left unable to find many of the items thay might desire due to differences in terminology. What I might term as cooking or cookbooks is referred to in my library catalog as cookery. This I consider to be a poor design choice on the behalf of the catalog creators, they should have choosen a term that is more current with today's vernacular not that of the early 19th century.
The question posed was does tagging belong in the library? My current answer would be no to any physical collection the library possesses. However digital collections, such as photos of library events should be tagged for users to be able to easily identify the event they were involved in.

Thing 12

So I'm killing two birds with one stone with Twitter. One of my summer classes is encouraging us to explore Twitter so that is what I am doing today. I do't really care what everybody out there is doing at this exact moment and b/c I know so many people I would feel totally overwhelmed if I intended to use this service. At least with Facebook after I get tired of certain people I can just hide their post, which can also probably be done on Twitter as well.

Last time I heard about Twitter was this morning at work somebody was joking about Tweeting something even though they don't Twitter.

I really doubt I will use this service, but it interesting to observe the ever evolving methods of communication.

Thing 11: Instant Messaging

In the past I've used IM and found it very capable. When my brother went to college in TN we used IM some to chat with him, since he was constantly on the computer. I use the chat feature in FB now to chat with my friends and family when their online at the same time as me.
I would like to have an IM network set up at work to let people know when I need help at the circ desk instead of having to track down someone before I leave the desk or if I'm so busy and can't stop what I'm doing to get backup. I would be able to ask for backup with the click of a few keys and that would be the end of it. That is if they show up. Since I work in consortium this would also be a handy tool for asking questions to other branches and getting a quick response without me calling them and waiting for answer. IM is a great tool and would definitely use more if my computer time was more for fun instead of work and school.

Thing 10: Ning

I like the design of Ning it has a very newsprint feel to it. This site may come in handy as I further my library career. However since I have so many contacts on FB, I think I'll just stick to one social network.
I checked out the National Association of Female Professionals, since I consider myself on the way to becoming one. Not only does this association have a group for all professionals it also has sub groups like Women in Federal Government and Women in Education to name a couple.

I also checked There-U-Go World Travel Experience which has really cool music to it. Someone had travelled to Andorra and posted pics of it, While the pics were not of professional quality they were still wonderful to view. Andorra is on my wish list of European places to visit.

I also saw that Ning was being used like our blogpress to host several library's 2.0 learning programs like ours.

So what Ning did customers really isn't cool, it is a business and it must make revenue to keep running. I really liked that there not many adds on the sites that I looked, so paying for the platform not to have adds makes sense to me.

More FB

I don't really like joining groups, this is true in real life also. So I've been procrastinating on this Thing. Also it takes forever to search through the groups because there is no search option available or if there is I could not find it.

Here are the Groups I've joined:

Smith Mountain Lake Events - to keep up with the things going on in my hometown.

Runner's World - to get tips on how to prevent shin splints that keep me from running daily and gain other info about running.

A while ago I joined the Roanoke Valley Library Association group.

I really do like FB however the group section is not one I will use often.

Facebook

I have been using Facebook since August 2008. I love being able to read about all the adventures of my friends and family. It has great tools on it to keep track of birthdays, books, movies, pictures, and events. This is my primary method of communicate with my little brother while he is stationed in Japan. He's not a big talker and neither I am so a few chats with on FB is a terrific way of keeping touch.

My library has its own FB page. It's a great way of promoting library programs and services. It would be even better if more people fanned us.

At first FB is overwhelming and I didn't quite understand the attraction, but now after using it for almost a year I find it to be a great resource.

I just got Internet service on my cell phone, so I could access my email and FB accounts, but have found that I prefer the computer screen size much better than the limited screen of my cell.

Even my Mom is on FB, which is really great, however she's pretty hip with technology, so I wasn't really surprised when she joined.

RSS Feeds

If you already have Blog Reader on your toolbar how to you get your feeds to go to the BLog Reader you want to use?
I plan to eventually figure this out, but will save it for another day. Currently, I am copying the URL link into the Reader I am using to suscribe or searching for it with search tool. However I know it would be much simpler just to be able to click on the orange RSS Feed link every time I want to subscribe to a new cite.

I do think RSS Feeds are a great way of synthesizing info all into one spot but its almost as bad as having a ton of email to check. However I think I will like the feeds better than email because I am a visual person I when I just have text I find I miss out on the meaning of some things because there are no visuals.

Blog Readers

Ha, I actually did this without realizing what I was doing. I wanted to stop having to jump back and forth from screen to screen and decided last time I was on to Follow the NorthTexas 23, so I could the new posts as they were available.

I allso added a few feeds I find interesting. Such as The Washington Post Jobs, The Simple Dollar, and an ALA feed which will hopefully be helpful in the future. I plan to add even more RSS feeds so I can unsubscribe to some of the email I don't always get to.

Image Generators

Logocreator was fun. I will defintely use this image generator for more of my work projects.

The Blackboard Generator was neat too. If I worked in a school library this could be a nice addition to a webpage or blog.
I think the image generators would be more useful to me if I worked with creating websites or blogs other than personal ones. But I will defintely keep them in mind for when I am creating posters and flyers at work for the library bookclub and other projects. With going to school online I have found that my desire to spend a lot of time online has dwindled, not that it was really there before.

Flickr 2 Part 2

Trying to do any of the fun things Flickr offers is not easy without signing up for a Flickr account. I don't take lots of pics and am pretty paranoid about what I post on the web even if it supposedly private, so I decided not to sign up for a Flickr account at this time.

Flickr 2

Here is my name as spelled by Flickr.

Flickr

So after a short hiatus, I am back to tackling the 23 things. Today I took the Flickr tour, which acquainted me with the neat options Flickr has. I create flyers at work and when I am looking for ideas I usually drop by and check out whats on FLickr under the topic of my choice. There are so many terrific photos on Flickr. I have yet to try out their video feature, but that may come in handy.

I found this great image of books as art on Flickr:

About me

I realize that my blog start off without anything about me on so here's the quick and dirty.

Name: Lisa

Occupation: Senior Library Assistant and Student through UNT

State of Residence: VA

Dreams: Of being a real librarian, living anywhere besides where I am or where I grew up, world travel, and working in a library that does not own 8000 DVDs and yes, I am serious 8000.

Age: I'll say 27 because its only 2 days away.

Addictions: Reading fluff, Facebook, the gym, and my mp3 player.

Misconceptions about me: That I'm a snob, sometimes I really am, but usually I'm just waiting for the other person to shut up, so I can talk.

Life philosophy: I haven't got one yet.

As you can tell I'm in a sarcastic mood, I promise that is not always the case, but there's no sunshine right now to put me in a good mood.

Thing 2

Ok, so I watched the videos and read the posts. Here are my thoughts on them. I hope that Steve Abram is correct and that I will begin to view my library and colleagues in a new way. I hope to become more excited about using Library 2.0 and Web 2.0 tools to create a more dynamic library, because right now my library is not very dynamic. The posts were interesting, but they all seem to say the same thing, that 2.0 is nothing to be afraid of you just need to get out there and use it. Well that's what I'm doing. So yeah for me!

Hello North Texas 23

Hi everyone,

I'm a little nervous about tackling this project along with my classes this summer and working full time, but I'm going to try because I really want to be able to understand all this stuff. This way I can explain it to other people in laymans terms, not computer geek speak.
